About the Institute

The key themes of our work

1. Civic engagement – localism and how to engage with all levels of government
2. Social policy – how we build bonding and bridging social capital across the U.K.
3. Cultural – sharing and celebrating the UK’s many cultures and traditions
4. Sport – uniting and providing opportunities through grass roots, amateur and professional sport
5. International – looking outward to see where British civic society can cooperate and strengthen work with international partners

How we do it

Research, action, results

The British Civic Institute will focus on commissioning research papers to highlight areas of positive progress across the United Kingdom.

Some areas the BCI will provide insight into are mental health provision in the UK; how can we learn from how the NHS and mental health charities operate in the constituent parts of the UK so as to offer the best care. Homelessness is another key pillar of focus; learning from local authorities and the third sector in how homelessness, particularly amongst the young, can be addressed and where best practice lies. Another key area to embrace involves listening to the future;  involving youth parliaments and young people in our research and forums to highlight the importance of the voluntary and charitable sectors.

Our process is:
Research
– commission in depth, data driven research into British civil society
Action – engage with key stakeholders to promote the value of civic society across the UK
Results – enhance the value of our civic society to strengthen our communities and the Union
